The École normale supérieure Paris-Saclay (also ENS Paris-Saclay or Normale Sup' Paris-Saclay), formerly ENS Cachan, is a grande école and a constituent member of Paris-Saclay University. The Wave Group researchers are based at Centre Borelli. In 2014, ENS Paris-Saclay became a founding member of the Paris-Saclay University, an initiative to integrate and combine resources from a number of different grandes écoles, public universities, and research institutions.
Prof Dias has been the leader of an innovative, world-class research group in fluid mechanics for the past 10 years, and the quality and impact of his research is recognised worldwide. In 2010 he received a large research award from Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) to build the first group in ocean wave energy at University College Dublin
Fluid mechanics has fascinated researchers for centuries and continues to do so today. Fluid mechanics is a very rich topic, covering a wide variety of applications (meteorology, climate, ocean waves, aeronautics, biomechanics, food industry, ship industry, oil and gas). The problem of turbulence is one of the central problems in theoretical physics. While the theory of fully developed turbulence has been widely studied, the theory of wave turbulence has been less studied, partly because it developed later.
HIGHWAVE covers simultaneously past, present and future energetic ocean waves. The project research, associated with sustainable environmental science and technology, will help future generations to improve environmental practice.
HIGHWAVE is a cutting edge mathematical project that uses real-time raw data harvested in situ by the project team to develop new models and new algorithms. These new models will provide information about air and water exchange in oceanic environments, boulder deposits, erosion and structural damage.
UCD School of Mathematics and Statistics is ranked in the top 1% in the world for both the subjects of Mathematics and Statistics (in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2016). The School is the largest of its kind in Ireland and offers the greatest choice of programmes at undergraduate, masters and PhD level, reflecting the ubiquity of the mathematical sciences in the modern world.
